Penny was a graduate of Bellville High School. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas where he was President of the UT American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Chapter. Penny enjoyed working and his commitment to the community was evidenced in his work. With the Galveston Corps of Engineers, he learned safety processes for post hurricane clean up. Penny was a part of the construction on the 61st street pier and the extension of the Galveston Seawall and several jetties. Later, through his own company, he won several government bids to manage post hurricane area clean up and built the waterways for Tiki Island.
Dedication to family was always evident in the Bertling home. Penny enjoyed educating his children and grandchildren. His family was charter members of a Baptist church in Galveston. He was recognized for his 65 years as a member of the Masonic Lodge in 2017. He always had a story to tell to anyone who would listen. Penny was an avid treasure hunter and invented his own detector.
Penny is survived by his five children and their families, Linda Kay Kragh, Gary Wayne Bertling, Nancy Diane Bertling, Deborah Ann Preisler, and Sharon Lea Bertling. He had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The last years of his life, he expressed a desire to come home to Bellville; this year he will be present for homecoming.
Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Monday, August 7, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Knesek Funeral Chapel, Bellville. Funeral services will be held at Knesek Funeral Home, Bellville, Tx, on Tuesday, August 8, 10 am, with Associate Pastor Brady Lock officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Bellville Tx 77418.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bellville, 504 E. Strauss, Bellville, TX 77418.
