John Doubleday was born on January 17, 1861 in Tennessee, and he was the son of George Doubleday (1823–1899) and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Doubleday (1830–1863).

He was married about 1890 to Mary Bettie Flowers (1868–1905), the daughter of Thomas H Flowers. The Doubleday family was in Cheatham County in the 1900 census, and John was a widower and alone in his Ashland City household in 1910.

A retired general store merchant living at 2507 Natchez Trace, Nashville, he was 74 years old and a widower when he died on November 18, 1935 at home of sudden apoplexy. Burial was the next day in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Much of the above is from his Death Certificate, with Mrs Mary Armstrong of 2507 Natchez Trace as the informant.

Known children of John and Mary:
~ (child) Doubleday died by 1900
~ Clara Doubleday (1892–1907)
~ (child) Doubleday died by 1900
~ Mary Bettie Doubleday (ca Jan 1898– ) m W L Armstrong
[1900 census for Mary = 4 children; 2 living]

[When John wrote his will - dated October 23, 1933 in Nashville & probated there on December 11, 1936 - he mentioned only 1 child, Mary Bettie Armstrong and her minor children, who were then 4 young daughters under the age of 10.]
