He earned a BA in Mathematics from Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois) and an MA in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. He taught at schools in DeKalb and Henderson Cos., Illinois and at the Howe Military School in Indiana (also as a football and track coach). He spent a total of 53 years as a teacher and substitute teacher in the Sturgis (MI) School System. While living at Howe and working as a postal clerk at Sturgis, he married Vivian Marie (Burns) Burmeister in Lagrange Co. Indiana on Nov. 3, 1934.
