Don was born in Olney, IL on July 31, 1934. While attending the University of Illinois, Don joined the Illinois Air National Guard to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot and shortly after was commissioned in the United States Air Force. He served 2 tours in the Vietnam War flying F4 Phantoms.
In 1964 he flew a world record setting 18-hour, non-stop flight taking off and landing at MacDill Air Force base to demonstrate the abilities of the F4 fighter jet and in-flight refueling.

After retiring, Don was active in his community of Odessa including serving as Commander of The American Legion Post #147. He was a long time member of Keystone United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling and spending time boating, fishing and scalloping with his family and friends, especially on the Homosassa River.
