Daughter of John Palmer and Samantha Nancy Gray [Dickerson].

Married twice:
1. Oliver Perry Whitten - filed for divorce in 1898, dismissed in 1902. One child, a son, born in Jul 1896 per the 1900 US Census, for Ripley county, where he is listed, as Allean Whitten, with Sarah in her mother's household.
2. John William Tungate [Tungett] - Nov 1902 in Jennings County. Sarah and William had the following children: Johnnie, Mamie, Leo and Bessie (per the 1910 US Census for the household). There was another son, Robert Lavon Tungate, that was born, and died, in 1908 - Sarah was the informant on his death certificate. She stated it was her second marriage and her surname,on the registration, was Whitten and she listed John Palmer and Samantha Gray to being her parents.

Sarah also had two sons: Charles Freeman Palmer (b. 1892) and Sylverna Michael "Vern" Palmer (b. Jul 1900). "Vern" Palmer is listed with her and John William in the 1910 US Census for Jennings county (his last name was listed as Tungett).

The few newspaper articles about Sarah, William and their children, which I have managed to come across, share three spellings of the surname: Tongate, Tungate and Tungett. Sarah's death certificate shares Tongate, her death notice shares Tungate and her daughter, Bessie, death certificate (where Sarah was listed as informant) Sarah signed her name as Tungett.

Information I have about John William Tungate [Tongate/Tungett]:
Appears he was married at least two times? In 1900 US Census a Wm. Tungate is listed as the husband of a Bertha - no children listed with them. I have not come marriage info for that couple. In 1910 census he is listed with Sarah as his wife and having 4 children together.

On his marriage applications/registrations, that I came across, he listed his father being John Tongate and his mother as Sailors/Sailers - which could also be Salers/Sallee surname? I came across a 1850s marriage record for a John Tongate to a Lurany Saler in Jennings county but that may be the parents of a John M Tongate?

Newspaper citation, in Jan 1913, leans to possibility that John William died after Mar 1912 and before Jan 1913. However I have came across information that has him passing away 23 April 1927 in Jennings County, but burial location was listed looks like to being in Bloomington.

He went by John on marriage records, then by William in newspaper accounts (about Bessie and Sarah's deaths as well the court mention in 1913 about the children of Wm Tungett becoming wards of the state and this is along with the US censuses for 1900 and 1910 as well as his death certificate.
__

Son Leo, later went by Leo Hadley as he may been formally adopted by his foster family. Leo used Hadley when he married so his children also have the Hadley surname.

Daughter Mamie appears to been taken in by a Schlotman [sp?] family. She went by Tongate in newspaper accounts I came across and also for her Social Security application. However her OH death certificate lists her foster parents' names.

I could not locate the oldest son, John Tungett/Tongate/Tungate, after the 1910 Census.

Allen Whitten appears to have passed away prior to 1910 US Census. In that Census Sarah is listed to having 7 children with 6 living. Charles Palmer was in Ripley county, "Vern" is listed in Jennings county in with the 4 children from Sarah's second marriage. This leaves the son during her marriage to Oliver Whitten unaccounted for? No, there was another child from her marriage to John William Tungate/Tungett that died in 1908 so this leaves Allen Whitten still a mystery.

Son, Charles Freeman Palmer, passed away in Anderson, Madison, Indiana in the 1960s.
__

Sarah also had a brother, David L Palmer (b. Sep 1850, Ripley county), that is not listed/linked below. I have no further information on him beyond his appearance in 1850, 1860 and 1870 census reports.
