Mary Lillie Novosad was born on March 16, 1926 to John and Rosie Novosad in Frydek, Texas. She was the third child born on the family farm being welcomed by older siblings, brother Joe and sister Albina. Three years later their family would be complete with the arrival of Jerry, another brother.

She had many fond memories of her life on the farm in Frydek. Even though life was hard and work was never ending, she always cherished her time there.

She attended Catholic school for several years before transferring to public school in Frydek. After completing the 9th grade there, she then rode the bus to Sealy High School where she graduated in 1945.

In September of that year she began her career at Citizens State Bank where she worked for 50 full time years and 5 part time. She loved her job at CSB and made many lasting friends there.

On February 9, 1948 she married Pete Gajewski at St. Mary’s in Frydek. She had always known Pete but only dated several times before he was called to service in the army. She faithfully waited for him for three years while he served his country. They had 38 happy years together. In 1986 she lost the love of her life. She had a hard time adjusting to her life alone and was always so grateful to her family, friends and co-workers for getting her through this difficult time.

It was after Pete’s loss when she began to devote her life to service to the church and community. She began by volunteering for Meals on Wheels, often delivering meals on her lunch break. Her service to the church began with taking communion to the shut-ins and visiting the sick, at one time ministering to 12 people, and loved every minute of it. She was an active member of the Altar Society and spent many years taking care of church linens. She was involved with the nursing home ministry and quilted every Monday with the Handmaids of the Lord where many beautiful quilts were made for the church auction. She volunteered at the church office and usually prepared a weekly treat for them. She was famous for selling raffle tickets for the bazaar and donated many items to the church auction. She was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed selling poppys and attending all of their functions. Her chicken salad sandwiches were famous at Bingo night.

On July 31, 2017 God answered her prayers for a quick and easy passage into the Kingdom of Heaven. Our loss is great but surely Heaven shines a little brighter now.

Mary is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, too many to mention.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Joe and Jerry Novosad, sister Albina Loescher and beloved husband Pete Gajewski.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Pall Bearers: Mary’s Godchildren, Karen Burttschell, Adam Burttschell
