“Dr. R. L. Dowell returned Thursday evening from the home of Scott Dowell in Jackson township where he was called to attend Vernie Austin, the boy who accidentally shot himself with a shotgun Thursday afternoon.

The Austin boy, who was nine years old, and the eleven-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Dowell were left at home Thursday while the other members of the Dowell family came to Chillicothe to do some trading. The boys decided to go squirrel hunting and went in the house and found Mr. Dowell’s shotgun. After getting shells enough to do them during the afternoon, the boys went to the woods near the house. They had killed three squirrels and the Austin boy had the gun. He stepped upon a stump to look in a tree for a squirrel. In some manner the gun slipped and the hammer hit on the stump causing the gun to be discharged. The entire load entered the boy’s abdomen, tearing a hole about three inches long. Dr. White was summoned from Springhill and did all a physician could do to save the boy’s life but he was too far gone.

After the terrible accident, the boys started for the house but after walking a quarter of a mile the little fellow became exhausted and fell to the ground. He was picked up and carried to the house by some men who were working in the hay field. He died within an hour.

The funeral was held from the Dowell home Friday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. E. R. Dowell conducting the services. Burial was made in the Brassfield Cemetery.” The Chillicothe Constitution, July 13, 1906
