Ethel was third of the four children of Irish immigrants Thomas Michael Ryan (1865-1903) and Anna A. Shea Ryan (1863-1937). Ethel married Francis George (Frank) Schaaf (1893-1965) on 21 July 1915 in Minneapolis, MN. The couple had one child, Catherine Charlotte (1920-1931), who had a disability from birth (osteogenesis) and died young. Her daughter's death was grievous for her mother and Ethel became a resident at Anoka State Hospital about 1933. She died there on 11 June 1958. She and Frank divorced. Her husband's life held further tragedies, as well. He remarried twice. His second wife, Elsie Bell Bailiff (1890-1941) was a widow without children when they married, and she died when a blood clot dislodged from a pulled tooth traveled to her brain. Frank's third wife was Hazel Lucille Kuehmichel (1905-1972). They adopted one daughter Pamela L. Schaaf (1943-2007).
