Sunshine VerPlanck Dudley, 91, died July 23, 2017 at Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads surrounded by family. The daughter of Isabel "Sunshine" and Beekman VerPlanck, she was born October 14, 1925 in Tampa, Florida. She attended Tampa schools and the University of Alabama. Following college, Sunshine was a flight attendant for National Airlines. She met her husband, Remmel H. Dudley, during a flight and they married three months later at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on February 14 (Valentine's Day), 1947.
Remmel (Lt. Col., USMC) and Sunshine lived happily in several spots across the United States while he completed a long and successful military career. Following his Marine Corps retirement, they settled in Falls Church, Virginia.
While he pursued a second career with Metropolitan Life, she enjoyed antiquing, needlepoint, and bridge as she continued to make wonderful friends. Always the life of the party, she loved people, and they loved her back. She often expressed that love by generously sharing her collection of hand-crafted angels, copper artifacts, and other gifts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, James VerPlanck. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, many cousins, and Remmel's loving and extended family.
