William Garret Van De Riet was the first child born to Herman and Sarah Elmyra (Hale) Van De Riet. He first married Rosa Koops on 13 Mar 1903 in Dispatch, Kansas, where their first child Herman Jack Van De Riet was born. They then moved to Farmington, Teton County, Montana, where their second child Lorenzo "Rinzo" was born.
Four days after Rinzo was born, his wife Rosa died on 25 Apr 1905 in Farmington. She is buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Rinzo lost his life in 1909 and is also buried in Trinity.

William then married Susie Luidema on 6 Jan 1906 in Choteau, Teton County, Montana. Four more children were added to this union: May Elmyra, wife of Ted Perry, Simon who lived 23 July 1908 to 12 Jan 1904, and is buried also in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Simon William, burn in 1910, and Louise, who married Joseph H Mozer Jr.

Shortly after Louise was born, William lost his life, and is buried in Clear Lake Cemetery, Chouteau County, Montana. His wife Susie continued to raise the family.
