He was born on May 29, 1921, in Stanley and was a son of the late Franklin Mayes and Mellie Short Mayes.
“Doc” was an Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was employed at Avtex for 37 years. He was a member of the Calvary Independent Brethren Church in Stanley and the VFW Post 7899.
On May 8, 1954, he married Mary Marie Mayes, who died on Oct. 26, 2016.
He is survived by a daughter, Betty Stillwell and husband Jay of Shenandoah; a son, Terry Mayes and wife Ann of Stanley; three grandsons, Tony Stillwell and wife Lorita, and Shawn Mayes, all of Luray, and Travis Mayes of Stanley; two granddaughters, Hollie Vile and husband Blair of Luray, and Jackie Mayes of Stanley; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Dilmon, Elwood, Harry, Loring and Frank Mayes; two sisters, Elizabeth Smith and Virginia Malbone; and two half brothers, Sam and Garland Short.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, at the Calvary Independent Brethren Church by Pastor Charles Turner. Burial will be in the Leake’s Chapel Cemetery in Stanley.
