Betty Ruth (Coen) Breland passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law while under Hospice Care.

She was born at home on September 29, 1924 in Skagit County, WA. She was raised with her 3 sisters and 2 brothers. She started 1st grade at Montbourne School located behind the post office and grocery store which is now the Big Lake Bar and Grill. In 2nd grade, her family moved to Chelan Falls for work. After the family returned, she attended the one room Erlich School through 8th grade. Erlich was located at the south end of Big Lake. Her teacher was Mildred Bean. She graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1943.

Ruth worked in Bellingham at Whatcom County Collecting while living with her aunt and uncle, Amy and Louie Nelson. She moved to Seattle in August of 1943 where she was employed by Alaska Communication Systems.

While in Seattle, she attended the Metropolitan Business College and was one of the top students in her class. She also met a sailor from Mississippi, Sam Breland, whose ship was in port in Seattle.

In 1945 she married Sam in Los Angeles, CA. He had returned from the war in the South Pacific. The couple moved to Birmingham, Alabama so Sam could attend air conditioning and refrigeration school. Ruth was hired at War Assets in Birmingham as head of payroll.

While in Alabama, Ruth and Sam attended the Wylam Presbyterian Church. They each made a decision to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ there.

Ruth and Sam lived happily in Birmingham until 1985 when Sam retired and they moved back to the Pacific Northwest. They immediately joined Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Ruth was happy to be back home even though she loved and missed her friends in the South. She continued to stay in touch for as long as she was able.

Ruth served as president of the Republican Women's Club, served as chaplain and treasurer of Eastern Star Cyrene Chapter #110 in Sedro- Woolley, and served at Trinity Presbyterian Church where she continued to be a member until her death.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Mae (Stewart) McKinney, her step-father, George McKinney, her sisters Blanche Wasson, Jean Dickenson, Anne Bennett, her brother James (Bud) McKinney, and her husband Sam. She is survived by her brother John McKinney of Burlington, grandson, Justin Huey of Burlington, daughter and son-in-law Patty and Steve Huey of Mount Vernon, and many beloved extended family members.

Remembrances are suggested to Cyrene Chapter #110 Order of the Eastern Star Scholarship Fund 23997 Martin Rd, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 Attn: Michelle Husser and/or Hill Creek Christian School Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2204 Mount Vernon, WA 98274, Attn: Amorah Nelson.

The family gives heart-felt thanks to Ruth's brother, John McKinney, for his constant vigilance, Julie Van Der Pol, Cheryl and Carl Peterson, and Rocio Rios for their tireless sacrifice of time and effort in caring for Ruth, Eastern Star Sister Betty Harris for her regular visits and constant encouragement, Trinity Presbyterian Church members and especially Carol Peterson, Josephine Suites staff including Chaplain Andy Yee and Edith Hansen who tirelessly assisted Ruth, and all the many committed Prayer Warriors especially over the past few months.
