Robert M. Holbert, a lifelong resident of Warrington, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at Doylestown Hospital. He was 84.
He was the husband of Elinor (Weiss) Holbert, who died April 8, 2006.
Born in Warrington, Robert was the son of the late Howard C. and Mildred (McCormick) Holbert.
Robert was the owner and operator of Holbert Motor Cars in Warrington, where he remained active until his death.
He was a 1939 graduate of Hatboro High School, where he met his wife.
Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on a PT boat in the South Pacific, where he became familiar with engine maintenance.
In 1950, he opened the Mobil gas station in Warrington, specializing in the repair and maintenance of foreign cars. In 1950, Robert began his dealership offering Porsches. In 1955, he began offering Volkswagen and in 1970 added Audi.
During 1955 and 1965, Robert was an amateur sports car road racer, racing MGs, Porsches and Shelby Ford Cobras. Once he stopped racing, Robert's lawn maintenance became his hobby.
He was a founding and lifetime member of the Old York Road Sports Car Club. During the 1970s, he served on the Volkswagen Dealership Council and the Audi Dealership Council and served on the board for Willow Grove Bank during the 1980s.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 1284, Doylestown.
Robert is survived by a son, Laurence, and his wife, Jean, of Furlong, and five grandchildren, Todd, Laura, Marc, Matthew, and Michael. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Alvah Holbert, a brother, Howard Jr., and a sister, Virginia Turner.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Holbert Motor Cars, 1607 Easton Road, Warrington, where the family will receive friends after 2 p.m. Interment will be held privately.
