WALLACE BATES VERNON SAILOR JUNEAU VICTIM
VERNON - Official announcement that Wallace Bates, 24, of this village, seaman second class, lost his life when the U.S.S. Juneau went down off Guadalcanal last November was received yesterday from Secretary of the Navy Knox by the victim's wife, Mrs. Jean Bates, who is making her home in Syracuse.
Seaman Bates, a graduate of Sherrill high School, was reported missing in action last November and his family had been awaiting word of his fate ever since. Sinking of the cruiser Juneau, on which he served, was announced in January by the Navy Department.
Before joining the Navy, Bates was associated with his father, Julius C. Bates in the printing business here.
Surviving besides his wife and father are his mother; two children, Mary Ann and Barbara Bates, Syracuse and a brother, Lt. (j.g.) Orville P. Bates, Navy.

Seaman W. J. Bates Reported Missing In Solomons Area
Second Class Seaman Wallace J. Bates, 24, has been reported missing in action in the Solomon Islands area by the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Julius C. Bates of Vernon, his parents, were informed yesterday. Bates, whose family lives at 100 Bassett Street, was a graduated of Sherrill High School and Cook Academy.
His wife is the former Miss Jean Gibson of Syracuse, and their two daughters, Marian Ann and Barbara Jean, lived at the Bassett Street address. A sister, Miss Thelma Bates also lives there. A Brother, Orville P. Bates, was recently commissioned a lieutenent, Junior grade and is training at Harvard University.

Widow Receives Husband's Medal
VERNON, March 10, _ Mrs. Wallace J. Bates f Syracuse had received the Purple Heart Medal award posthumous to her husband, Wallace J. Bates, Seaman Second Class in the U. S. N. by Franklin D. Roosevelt, president of the United States.
The medal is a certificate of Recognition given for military merit to soldiers wounded in the service or who died from wounds received in action. Young Bates participated in 16 major and minor engagements and was killed in action in the Guadalcanal area on Nov. 13, 1942.
He was a graduate of Sherrill High Scholl at the tie of his enlistment and was employed by the Vernon Press of which his father was the owner. He was the son of Mrs. and Mts. Julius C. Bates
