John was about six years old when his parent's headed west from Indiana to find free farm land the new Oregon Territory. His father, John H., was born in 1799, in Washington County, Virginia and his mother, Mary Scott, was born in Indiana. His parent's were married in Holt County, Missouri, on 07 Jan 1843.

In the Oregon City Land Office his parent's applied for Oregon Donation Land Claim, No. 175, located near Corvallis, Benton, Oregon. On 14 Aug 1846, they secured their claim after fulfilling all of the requirements passed by the Congress of the United States and signed into law by the President.

John W. Stewart and Miss Mahala Stewart were married on 11 Apr 1880, near Corvallis, at Mahala's family home. John's father was John N. Stewart and Mahala's father was James H. Stewart. They were from two separate family lines that both pioneered in the Oregon Territory as well as lived in Indiana.

John W. and his father spent about eight years ranching in Grant County, Oregon. From what the newspaper wedding announcement said, these eight years may have over-lapped with John's wedding, on 11 April 1880, to his wife Mahala.
