Edna Luella Gable was the daughter of an extremely prominent businessman and civic leader in Altoona, PA, growing up during the period that the William F. Gable Department Store became a centerpiece of the town. She was the oldest of 9 children and would have seven herself. Edna married James Henry Powers on 26 May 1903, who was a bookkeeper in Altoona on the 1900 Census, but I do not know how they met. James moved to Hazleton in the early 1900's to "become manager of the Prince Furniture Store when that firm took over the 'White Palace' which Margwarth Brothers had built on West Broad Street." employment is listed as "Manager Furniture Store" on all Census records. The family always seems to have rented their residence, and in the 1910 Census a servant is living with them, 21-year-old Tessie Bishop, who came to the US from Germany in 1908. They reside at 63 Vine Street in Hazleton, PA on the 1910 and 1920 Census (there is no servant in 1920, but the family now has six children). The family lives at 325 West Diamond Ave, Hazleton, PA, in 1930 (where her occupation changes from "none" to "Music Teacher, same as the 1940 census).
