A Leonard Gilson was born in Torpa, Ostergotland, Sweden, named August Leonart Adolfsson to Adolf Wilhelm Oscar Johansson and Albertina Charlotta Johansdotter on 29 September 1875. He was the youngest of eight children. He emigrated to Galesburg on 10 April 1893 in company with his brother Gustaf Alfred Adolfsson. He was welcomed in Galesburg by his oldest sister Hedda "Aunt Hattie" Christina Adolfsdotter. They all took the family name Gilson in the new country. Leonard lived the rest of his long and fruitful life in Galesburg.
