Rena was born June 10, 1925 in Kerrville, the 8th child born to Plenny & Bessie Nelson. (Elmer, P.L. and Allen Nelson; Bonnie West, Eloise Brown, Lillian Ray, Vera King & Rena Sandidge Scott)
Soon after Rena's birth, Bessie died, leaving her 8 precious babies motherless. All 8 children were taken in by Bessie's older sister Emma and her husband, Tom Caffall. Tom and Emma already had 6 boys (Leland, Ray, Eph, Alton, Jess & Oscar Caffall), but their love and loyalty to family ties led them to share their home and whatever they had.
After a time, Plenny remarried and the oldest 6 kids returned to live with their dad and stepmother. But babies Rena and Vera (who was 13 months older than Rena) stayed with Tom and Emma and were raised as Caffalls.
Rena lived in various places including Rio Hondo, Tarpley (where she started school) and San Antonio (where she attended jr. high) Texas and Roswell, New Mexico while growing up, but the family primarily lived in Bandera, where Rena (and her sister Vera) graduated from Bandera High School in 1943.
During the following years, Rena lived and worked in Bandera.
Rena met G.T. Sandidge Jr. while working at First State Bank in Bandera, and they were married on Feb. 12, 1949.
They had 3 children, and in 1962 they moved to Tarpley. G.T. preceded her in death in April 1986.
Rena married Rev. Bob Scott in 1989 and they lived in Arkansas for 2 years until his retirement. They moved to Tarpley, and they have enjoyed traveling and sharing their many interests together.
Rena has been a lifelong traveler, and her interests are varied-- but one of her greatest loves has always been people-- her family, friends and loved ones. One of the easiest ways to put a mile on her face was for a loved one (especially her kids and grandkids) to walk in the door. She had a special relationship with all her brothers and sisters, Caffalls and Nelsons alike. They were all pretty partial to "Baby Sister," and I figure the loud uproar and shouts of joy were pretty significant when Rena left this earth and traveled to the next.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, and served on many district, conference, national and world-wide committees and boards. She served 2 terms as President of the Southwest Texas Conference United Methodist Women, and was on several boards including the Board of Global Ministries, the World Methodist Council (Appointed in 2001 in Brighton, England) and the Board of General Unity and Interreligious Concerns (where she first met Rev. Bob Scott)
Rena is survived by her husband, Bob; sons Rob (& Roxy) Sandidge and Dan (& Ella) Sandidge; daughter Rev. Janna Sandidge (& Leslie) Hawes; stepson George III (& Barbara) Sandidge; stepdaughter Robin Scott; grandchildren Tobey (& Sharon) Sandidge, Manny (& Jennifer) Sandidge, Matt (& Angela) Sandidge, and Carrie Sandidge (& Neal) Ervin; step-granddaughter Shauna Sandidge (& John) Davis; great-grandchildren Calvin, Nolan, Luke, Levi, Layne, Logan, Delaney & Lila Sandidge, and Peyton and Paxton Ervin; step-great-grandsons Frank and Andrew Kingman; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
