Betty graduated from Maury High School and Kees Business College. She was a member of Al- Anon since 1952 and began the first group in Ocean View at the church of the Advent in 1963. She devoted a good portion of her life to helping others and volunteered for several organizations. Betty served on the board of the VA. Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, the Norfolk Community Services Board, the Vestry of the Church of the Advent and the Committee on Alcohol for the Southern Diocese of Norfolk. She was an Arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau and a representative for the VA. Insurance Counseling & Assistance Program for the Tidewater area. Betty retired from the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in 1978 after 26 years of service. Betty loved to travel, playing cards (especially bridge) and being with her family. Betty was predeceased by her mother & stepfather, Edna & Guy "Son Pop" Woodhouse and her devoted husband, Gorman G. Brinkley. She is survived by her loving sister , Mary "Pete" Paris of Pinebrook, NJ and her loving children : Betty B. Duke & her husband , Leiland of Germantown , TN; Dianna B. Fincher & her husband , D. Leon Fincher of Culpeper, VA; and Beverley B. Ann Wolff of Norfolk, VA. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, fourteen great- grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. For the last 6 years Betty enjoyed life at the Ballentine home in Norfolk. We cannot thank the staff enough for their loving support, devotion and assistance they gave to our mother during these years.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Church of The Advent, 9629 Norfolk Avenue, Norfolk, VA. Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
