John Wallace Bain, age seventy-nine, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017 in Bryan, Texas following a lengthy illness. He was born on September 7, 1937 in Centerville, Texas to Charles Crawford & Robbie (Johnson) Bain. John grew up in Centerville and made a decision to stay in his hometown after graduation. He held numerous jobs when he was younger working for several local businesses including Ward Lumber Company, driving a truck; Texaco (next to the Town Café during that time); Keeling Motors; Centerville Lumber and Hill Grocery. Perhaps John’s most recognized position was the acting general manager of Western Auto in Centerville, where he worked for forty plus years. His son, Greg, later joined him, and together they worked diligently helping the people of Centerville and surrounding areas with merchandise sales or various matters and problems that were experienced. Every weekday morning before eight o’clock, one would often find John outside sweeping the porch and setting out equipment for the day. When he wasn’t at work, John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, offering his help and support whenever and wherever he was needed. When John was younger, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he later passed that love to his children. He also enjoyed solving jumbo crossword puzzles. John was a lifelong resident of Centerville and a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Centerville. John was preceded in death by both of his parents; son, John “Buddy” Bain, Jr.; brothers, Jim, Robert & Wayne Bain and sisters, Mary Roliard, Lilly Stevens and Billie Weisinger. He is survived by wife, Peggy (King) Bain of Centerville; children, Tammy Gilbert (husband, Alton) of Crockett, Donald Bain (Dannette) of Centerville and Greg Bain of Centerville; brothers, Jack Bain (wife, Shirley) of Centerville & Kenneth Bain (wife, Patricia) of Canton and sisters, Dorothy Pate (husband, Gene) of DeSoto and Patsy Ragland of Red Oak. John is also survived by grandchildren, Nick, Niles, Bradley, Noah (wife, Cindy) and Nathaniel and great grandchildren, Kayson & Ashton. Funeral services for John are scheduled for 11 A.M., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville. Bro. Dean Easterling and Bro. Jim Bob Gunnels will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, south of Centerville. A public visitation will take place from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., Friday, July 14th at the funeral home. Walters Funeral Home in Centerville is in charge of all arrangements.
