James Leon Hawkins "Jim" died peacefully on August 29th in Anaheim at the age of 92 due to a recent heart attack . He inspired all who knew him by his enthusiasm and remarkably positive attitude.
He is survived by Helene, his wife of 66 years, his 10 children and 16 grandchildren.
Jim was born February 12, 1923 in Lewiston, Idaho. His family eventually settled in Beaumont, California where he attended his last 2 years of high school. He eventually moved to Los Angeles where he met his wife, Helene.
He entered the U.S. Navy in WWII, and was always proud to be a veteran. He had a 44 year career with McDonnell Douglas. He loved engineering missile and aircraft systems, but even more enjoyed recruiting college graduates into a career at Douglas Aircraft.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, as a troop leader and a District Council member. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to Scouting. He was active in the Order of the Arrow, the L.A. High Adventure Committee, and founded the mountaineering program for Eagle Scouts, "Quest Beyond the Eagle". To honor his many achievements the "Jim Hawkins Mountaineering Award" was created.
The funeral services are to be held at San Antonio Catholic Church in Anaheim on September 17, 2015 at 10:30 AM with a reception following.
