Agnes Carlson grew up on a farm near Georgetown in Wiliamson County, Texas. She was the second of seven children and she had two sister and four brothers. Her family attended the Swedish Evangelical Free Church in Georgetown.

On Dec. 13 , 1911, she married the Rev. Ernest Johnson, a minister of her faith, in Williamson County, Texas. Agnes and Ernest moved to Nebraska for Ernest's calling and spent much of their time raising family there, moving around among communities as ministers often do. They moved back and forth to Texas as well, going to any places with clusters of Swedish immigrants.

The 1920 census recorded Agnes and Ernest living in Emerick, Madison, Nebraska with children: Dagmar, 7; Laverne, 6; Milton, 3; and Ruby, 1. The 1930 census recorded Agnes and Ernest living in the community of Melvin in McCulloch County, Texas with children: Dagmar, 17; Laverne, 16; Milton, 13; Ruby, 11; June, 9; Eldora, 6; and Bryan, 2.

The 1940 census recorded where people had lived in 1935 and it showed that Agnes and Ernest had lived in Bastrop County, Texas, while their children Eldora and Bryan had lived in Phelps County, Nebraska, the same county where they had been born.
