Services were held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Belview for Alfred Gimmestad, 89, who died Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Redwood Falls Hospital. Interment was in the church cemetery Sunset Funeral Home of Echo in charge of the arrangements.
Alfred "Stubbs" Melvin Gimmestad was born April 27, 1902 in Swedes Forest Township, Redwood County to Andrew O. and Annie Hegdahl Gimmestad. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belview. He graduated from Belview High school and from St. Olaf College, Northfield, in 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bee's in the South Pacific during World War II.
On May 10, 1946 he married Clarinda Lavon Sampson at the Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The couple settled in Belview. He served on the Belview village council for several years and then was city clerk from 1961-1975. He also served as the financial secretary for Grace Lutheran Church for many years. He kept up the Gimmestad family home in Belview until 1987.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dennis Alfred of St. Louis Park; one sister, Agnes Gimmestad of St. Louis Park; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Oscar, Bernard, William, Alfred Oliver, and Walter; and three sisters, Ella, Bertha, and Evelyn.
