Haldane 'Hal' Griggs dies; ex-Butler athlete

Haldane A. "Hal" Griggs, 87, Buena Park, Calif., one of of Butler University's greatest athletes, died Tuesday.

Mr. Griggs, a former Indianapolis resident who moved to California in 1947, played football and basketball and was on the track team at Butler in the 1920s.

Paul D. "Tony" Hinkle, retired coach and retired athletic director at Butler, said that in the 1920s when Butler came into power as a contender in various sports, Mr. Griggs was "one of the goodies."

Hinkle remembered that Mr. Griggs kicked two field goals in the 1922 Butler-Illinois football game, which Butler won, 9-7. From then on he was known as "Golden Toes."

"He was a halfback in football, but was an awfully good place kicker," Hinkle said.

Mr. Griggs was an all-around athlete. He also ran track and played baseball and basketball.

Hinkle, an assistant basketball and assistant football coach at the time, said Mr. Griggs was on the Butler basketball team that won the Amateur Athletic Union National Championship in 1923.

Mr. Griggs set the state record for the high hurdles during a track competition in which he ran in a baseball uniform. He ran the high hurdles between innings of a baseball game.

Mr. Griggs left Butler in 1924 to join the Chicago White Sox but played for the team for only a short time, said Merle H. Miller, his brother-in-law.

From there Mr. Griggs moved to Akron, Ohio, where he was assistant recreational director for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. He moved to Indianapolis in 1942 and went to work for Firestone at Noblesville. He moved to California in 1947.

Mr. Griggs retired from Ohio Rubber Co. in Buena Park in 1964.

Graveside services will be at noon Saturday in Holy Cross Cemetery in Huntington Beach, Calif. Renaker Funeral Home in Buena Park is handling arrangements.

Survivors: wife, Marie Griggs; son, Robert Griggs; daughter, Sandra Cope and Linda Chernis.
