Golf Professional, Author. Born in Austin, Texas, he began his golf career as a caddy at Austin Country Club and became the club's assistant pro in 1917. After his graduation from high school, he was promoted Austin Country Club’s head professional, serving (1923-73). He also was the head golf coach at University of Texas, (1931-63) and coached the Longhorns to 21 South Conference championships. In addition, he coached many professional golfers such as Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls and Kathy Whitworth. In 1989, he was honored by the PGA of America as Teacher of the Year. His book “Harvey Penick's Little Red Book" (1992), became the best selling sports book of all time. He died in Austin, Texas, at age 90 and was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.
