By occupation, he was a machinist, but he turned soldier in 1861 by volunteering with Company E of the Fifteenth Regiment of Virginia Infantry at Camp Adams. One of the many wounded at Sharpsburg. He was absent without leave in February of 1863, having returned by March, he left again in June. On 20 July 1863 it was reported that he had deserted and was in Hanover County. By order of Colonel Morrison, he was dropped from the role in November. Hanes was arrested in March of 1864. The muster accounts for his presence through the autumn of 1864, and he was paid. On 8 March 1865 he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, suffering from catarrh.CO E

Originally unmarked, L. Scott Hanes ordered the headstone through the VA in 1989 and had it placed.
