James enlisted in Philadelphia as a Private in Company "D", 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on 17 September 1861. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 19 March 1862; 1st Lt. (and transferred to Company "K") on 4 August 1862; and Captain (and transferred to Company "L") on 23 December 1863. He mustered out on 26 October 1864, and later received the Brevet rank of Major on 13 March 1865. His brother Louis served in the War, later rose to the rank of General, and received a Medal of Honor for valor while engaged against Native forces in 1868.

James became Companion #00351 of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), the first post-Civil War veterans' organization, formed by and for Union army and navy officers. His Loyal Legion membership medal is shown here.

After the War, James worked as an attorney. He married Harriet Dorr in New Jersey on 17 October 1867. They had at least four children: Edward, Helen, William D. and Lloyd Preston. He died of heart disease, per state records.
