Note: No burial record has been found for Edward, but he is most likely buried in the Governor Arnold Burying Ground where most of his wife's siblings and her parents are buried. Two of his children and one of his grandchildren have surviving gravestones there. His birth year is estimated from the year he graduated from Harvard (1673). While some of his older siblings were born in Cambridge, Mass., his parents returned to England for a spell, where he may have been born.

Edward was the son of Herbert Pelham and Elizabeth Bosvile of Boston, Lincolnshire, England and Cambridge, Mass. He was married (per Austin) on 18 April 1682 to Freelove ARNOLD, b. 20 July 1661, d. 8 Sep 1711, the daughter of Governor Benedict Arnold and Damaris Westcott. Edward received his A.B. from Harvard in 1673. He inherited extensive lands, and besides owning land in Newport, he owned a large estate in Cambridge, Watertown, and Sudbury, Mass., and a life estate in Smeeth Hall (in Chapel Hall), Lincolnshire, England.

Edward was a shipwright, and became a Newport freeman in 1684. He served on a grand jury in 1688, and on 4 March 1702 was a proprietor in the common lands. He was a Newport deputy in 1707, and on 25 Aug 1711 he and wife Freelove deeded land to their daughter Elizabeth, wife of John Goodson, just prior to Freelove's death.

Freelove's will was dated 7 Jan 1710, but not proved until 3 May 1732, well after her death, and the death of her husband, and against the protest of her son Edward. On 21 Sep 1730, John Comer of Newport wrote in his diary, "This day died Mr. Edward Pelham, senior, a witty man and a great scholar; but alas light in his conversation. He never engaged in any business but lived on his inheritance." References for Edward include: Colket in TAG 18:144-45, 211-218, 19:197-202; NEHGR 33:291.
