Harry GULL was the son of Alberta Elizabeth HANSEL & John O GULL.
In 1915 he removed to Birch River Manitoba where after two years of failed wheat crops, he joined the Canadian Military(Princess Patricia's Light Infantry) on 06DEC1917 suffered a broken leg dockside at Halifax, Nova Scotia when a French ammunition ship and a Belgian Relief ship collided in the harbor with the resultant explosion causing thousands of deaths and injuries.
After WWI he worked in the logging camps of Manitoba before returning to Iowa and a stint in California helping to build the Ford Motor Plant.
In Iowa during the 1930's he operated the ‘Gray Gull' towboat on the Mississippi until WWII.
…In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and was one of only five survivors of the Japanese torpedo attack on his cargo ship in the Sea of Japan enroute to Vladivostok, USSR. He and other four crewmen were rescued by the Soviet Navy and interned till early in 1945(Soviet Union was a neutral in Japanese/American WAR until August 1945).
He was on shipboard during bombardment of Kwajalen Island, wounded(not verified) somewhere in Pacific, & at Battle of Iwo Jima.
Until retirement, he was a carpenter and construction worker.
