Trooper Ryan M. Albin, age 37, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from injuries he received in an accident while on patrol.

His canine partner, Biko, who was in the back seat of the squad car, survived.

Ryan joined the Illinois State Police Friday, January 6, 2009. He graduated from the Academy with Class 111 and was assigned to District 6, Pontiac. During his tenure, he was promoted to Trooper 1st Class.

In 2015, he received an Officer of the Year Award. He was a member of Illinois Troopers Lodge #41 Fraternal Order of Police.

FARMER CITY, Ill. (NBC) - The Illinois State Police led the funeral procession for Trooper Ryan Albin. He was killed in an accident, and his K9 partner, Biko, was injured on Wednesday.

The State Trooper's squad car and a Freightliner were involved in the crash while in slowed and stopped traffic near a construction zone. Trooper Albin was airlifted to a hospital in Champaign, where he later died of his injuries.

Biko was taken to an emergency veterinarian with minor injuries.

Trooper Albin was 37-years-old. He joined Illinois State Police in January 2016.

Farmer City, Illinois — Illinois trooper killed in crash remembered as hard worker

Friends are remembering an Illinois State Police trooper who died in a vehicle crash as a hard worker and good-hearted man.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports a procession of about 120 police vehicles Thursday escorted 37-year-old Ryan Albin's body from Urbana to a Farmer City funeral home. His friend Chad Yeadon was one of more than 150 people who gathered to watch. Yeadon remembered Albin's unforgettable laugh and called him "a really good guy."

Albin died Wednesday following a crash along Interstate 74 involving a tractor-trailer in slow traffic near a construction zone. The crash is under investigation.

Albin's Eureka College football coach Darrell Crouch said he was "really, really proud" of Albin.

A visitation is scheduled Wednesday and a funeral Thursday, both at Blue Ridge High School in Farmer City.

Illinois State Trooper Ryan Matthew Albin, age 37, of rural Bellflower, Illinois, passed away at 8:27 P.M., Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Illinois.

Ryan was born November 16, 1979 in Urbana, Illinois, the son of Robert C. and Rebecca A. Cohoon Albin. He is survived by his beloved children, Stella Grace, age 6, and Charlie Robert, age 2; his parents of rural Bellflower, Illinois; his twin sister, Raeanne (Peter) Stegemann of Avon, Indiana; his sister, Rachelle Albin of Mesa, Arizona; special nieces, Chloe, Olivia and Mia Stegemann; many cousins; aunts and uncles; and his Illinois State Police, K9 partner, Bico. Ryan was preceded in death by his grandparents and one cousin, Brian Cohoon.

He graduated from Blue Ridge High School, Farmer City, Illinois, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He later attended Eureka College where he received numerous conference honors in football. Ryan was accepted into the Illinois State Police Academy Class 111. Ryan was assigned to District 6, Pontiac, Illinois, where he faithfully and successfully served eleven and one-half years. Ryan was awarded 2015 District 6 Officer of the Year. He was also awarded numerous Department Commendations and awards for his exemplary criminal interdiction work and DUI enforcement. He was a member of the National Criminal Enforcement Association, served as a Juvenile Officer and a Fraternal Order of Police Trustee. Ryan attended Trinity Community Fellowship, Farmer City, Illinois. Ryan loved growing up on a farm and loved his Bellflower Community. Ryan’s laughter and smile could brighten any room and was a testament to his faith, work ethics and his many friends that he had made throughout his life. Ryan loved his children, family and friends. He enjoyed working out. Ryan’s joy was becoming a Trooper and serving the public each day with his partner, Bico. Ryan will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Blue Ridge High School, 411 N. John Street, Farmer City, Illinois. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Blue Ridge High School, 411 N. John Street, Farmer City, Illinois with Pastor Dave Ashby officiating. Burial will follow in Bellflower Township Cemetery, Bellflower, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Trooper Lodge #41.
