Richard L. Alexander, 90, of Washington passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at his residence.

He was born on August 1, 1926, son of Robert and Mildred “Dolly” Alexander. He married Ruth “Tootie” Meyer on January 31, 1948 in Washington. Ruth passed away on July 27, 1993. On April 26, 1996 he married Connie Pyle and she passed away on March 2, 2016.

Surviving are one son, Jeff (Bonnie) Alexander of Washington, IL, two daughters, Kim Hess of Washington, IL and Beth (Ben) Lee of Las Vegas, NV. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Lindsay Alexander, Lauren Obalil and Hayley Hess all of Washington, IL; Alex Hess of Morton, IL, Andy Lee of Austin, TX, and Aimee Stone of Las Vegas, NV. along with 8 great grandchildren. Two brothers Charles and Donald along with one sister Margaret Heavrin preceded him in death.

Dick was a WWII Veteran, serving two years in the U.S. Navy aboard LST 833. He was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. Dick worked for Travelers Insurance Co. in Peoria for nine years as an insurance adjuster. In 1960 he became an insurance agent in Washington, IL until his retirement on August 1, 1991.

Dick was active in Washington serving as a city alderman from 1957 until 1961. He was a member of Washington Grade School District 52 board, served on the Washington Park Board and Trustee of Washington Township for 8 years. Dick was a Rotarian from 1960 until 1995 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Washington Civic Club from 1960 until 2001. Dick was also a member of the WCHS Booster Club and received Panthers Pride Award, along with his wife Ruth in 1989. He was awarded the Washingtonian Award in 1961. Dick was a founder of the Washington Biddy Basketball program.

Visitation will be Friday, June 30, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mason-White Funeral Home in Washington. Cremation will follow his visitation and a Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Washington. Pastor Tom Heren will officiate. An additional visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will immediately follow his service and be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington with Military Honors rendered. Memorials in his name may be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
