Duane was born Aug. 8, 1931, the son of Raymond and Josephine (Webster) Anton in Waterloo. He grew up on the family farm outside of La Porte City, as a fourth generation Iowan. As a boy, Duane would ride his pony, NanGBud, to school and back. Duane served during the Korean War in the United States Navy aboard the USS Salisbury Sound. On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Margaret Yant at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo. They were married for 53 years. Margaret passed away in September 2009.

Duane was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America and Kiwanis. He was a longtime high school football official for the Mississippi Valley and Iowa conferences. Duane was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Washington High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and longtime football season ticket holder. Duane was also a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the El Kahir Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Ivan, Keith and Beryl; brother-in-law, Richard Yant; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Breitbach Anton.
