Sara Eugenia Kyger McClelland completed her long and blessed earthly journey and entered the Gates of Heaven on June 27, 2017, after a brief illness in Henderson, Texas. Born April 15, 1922, in Beaumont, Texas to Bryan Halbert Kyger and Sara Lucretia Youngblood Kyger. She was the second child of four children and the only daughter. Sara graduated from Henderson High School in 1939. She continued her education at Baylor University, studying with graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After graduation, Sara taught at Henderson High School. During the summer of 1944, she answered the national call for teachers to work that summer in Washington, D.C. as secretarial staff for the War Department.

On October 20, 1946, Sara married George Dewey McClelland in Henderson, Texas, after George returned from serving in the US Army, Pacific Theater during World War II. George and Sara’s 71-year marriage was a guiding light to all who knew this loving couple and most of all to their children and grandchildren. George and Sara traveled to Europe and the United States together, and accomplished many great projects, including the 911 mapping and addressing of Rusk County and Harrison County in the 1990s. Mother was a woman of great Christian faith, who taught Girls’ Auxiliary, Vacation Bible School, and many Sunday School classes, especially for young married women.

Sara is preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Lucretia Kyger, and her brothers Bryan Halbert Kyger, Jr. (LaNelle), William Morris Kyger (Rachel), and James Fremont Kyger (JoNan). She was also preceded in death by her niece Karen Kyger. She was preceded in death by her sister-in-law Faye McClelland and brother-in-law James Patrick McClelland, MD.
