He was a son of the late Roy and Ellen (Owens) Broadbent, born in East Liverpool on Jan. 5, 1932. Following his graduation from East Liverpool High School in 1950, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in North Africa for 18 months during the Korean War.
On July 10, 1954, he married the former Dorothy Hist, and together they raised their family in this area. They cherished the time spent with their girls and their grandchildren, and also loved following The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Along with Dorothy, he was a loyal member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and its Olde Guard.
For many years, Ed had been an armature winder at the former Crucible Steel, retiring when the mill closed in 1982. He then worked as a custodian at East Liverpool City Schools, had driven the CARTS bus for area seniors, and also worked at various Ohio State Liquor Stores.
Ed loved being busy, and had been an active member of Riddle Lodge 315, serving as Master in 1964. He belonged to the Royal Arch Masons 100, Keramos Council 95, where he was Past Illustrious Master, and Pilgrim Commandery 55 Knights Templar. Ed was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville; Northern Panhandle Shrine Club; Osiris Temple; Legion of Honor; East Liverpool Shrine Club (where he was Past President); and Elks Lodge 1040.
A proud American, he held life memberships in the Tri-State Korean War Veterans Chapter 126, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 66, and the American Legion Post 374.
Ed and Dorothy were longtime members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry at one time.
In addition to Dorothy, who survives him at home, Ed leaves behind three daughters: Dottie Orlo and her husband, Joe, of East Liverpool; Mary Ellen Carnahan and her husband, Tom, of Greensburg, Pa.; and Kathryn Hutchman and her husband, Dave, also of East Liverpool.
There are six beloved grandchildren: Stephanie Orlo, Emily Orlo, Thomas Carnahan, Elizabeth Carnahan, Andrew Hutchman and Megan Hutchman, as well as his niece Marcie Porter, and nephew Carl Miller, both of Salem.
A sister, Ellen Frances Miller, died in 2010.
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.
Rev. Steven McKeown will officiate at a funeral service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors.
