Earl was the son of Millard and Juanita Sumpter.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Martha Ayers Sumpter, granddaughter Amanda Lynn Sumpter, parents Millard and Juanita Fleemon Sumpter, brother Maynard Frank Sumpter, daughter-in-law Marcia Sumpter and brother-in-law Quinton Littrell.

Earl is survived by his sons: Sam Sumpter Keaton, Ky; Jim (Valerie) Sumpter Ewing, Va, brothers: Joe (Maggie) Sumpter, Tipp City, OH; Clyde (Barbara) Sumpter, Huber Heights, OH, Pete (Sally) Sumpter, Ewing, VA, Roger (Sue) Sumpter, Ewing, VA; Sisters: Mildred Snyder, Siesta Key, Fla, Sue ( Sonny) Sivils, Springfield, OH, Bobbie Littrell, Ewing, VA, sister-in-law Bonnie Sumpter, Sarasota, Fla. Grandson: Sam (Gina) Sumpter, Jr., Cataula, GA, granddaughter Kristi (Michael) Niette, Butler, GA, great grandsons Tyler Sumpter, Tampa, FL, Solomon Niette, Butler, GA, great granddaughter Chelsea Sumpter, Kingsport, TN and Alayna Niette, Butler, GA and a host of nieces and nephews and several special friends.

Earl was known throughout the community for his infectious smile. He was a Deacon and choir director for the Walnut Hill Baptist Church. He was retired from A&P Food Stores in Middlesboro, KY after over 30 years. Earl was a life member of the VA Junior Order United American Mechanics, former member of Lincoln Memorial University Nursing Board, former member of The Salvation Army, past Chairman of the Lee County Water Authority and was instrumental in bringing public water to lower Lee County. He was also Past Scout Master and Ruitan Club Member. Earl loved everyone and greatly enjoyed fishing. He is most well known for his singing in hundreds of funerals including our very first service here at Green Hills Funeral Home.
