Ernest Wardell Miller, 88, of Shawnee and formerly of Wichita, KS, passed away June 19, 2017. The rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 23 at St. Martin Catholic Church, 1368 Xylan Rd, Piqua, KS; followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will be at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Haysville Community Library, Haysville, KS or St. Martin's Cemetery Fund, Piqua, KS.

Ernest was born June 17, 1929, the son of Orr D. and Gwendolyn C. (Hamilton) Miller, in Beloit, WI. Neal, KS was his boyhood home. He served in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1952. He received his Bachelor's degree from Friends University and Master's degree from Emporia State University. Ernest worked as a school teacher and librarian for 37 years; retiring in 1994. He worked as a teacher at Park Intermediate School in Valley Center and Woodlawn Elementary and as a librarian at L'Ouverture Elementary in Wichita. Beginning in 1968, he worked as a librarian at Haysville Junior High School until his retirement. After retiring, Ernest's commitment to reading and education continued with his work at the Haysville Community Library. He also volunteered at the Rhein Benninghoven Elementary School in Shawnee, KS, reading stories to his granddaughters' elementary school classes. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Shawnee and when living in the Wichita area, he was a member of St. Anne's and St. Jude's Catholic Church. He also held memberships as a life member of N.E.A., Neal KS U.M.C., International Reading Association, KASL-Kansas Association of School Libraries and Phi Delta Kappa. His parents and his brothers, Richard and Marion, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dolores L. (McNett); daughter, Gayle E. Bohling and husband Curt of Shawnee, KS; son, Alan W. Miller and wife Vallerina of Haysville, KS; six grandchildren, Leah Chambers and husband Cody, Jacob Miller and his wife Karina, Samantha Miller, Mary Miller, Calista Bohling and Virginia Bohling; four great grandchildren, William, Jackson and Tucker Chambers, and Gabriella Miller.
