Ricky Reid "Rick" Amos, 70, of Fairmont, was born on September 16, 1946, and passed away early Saturday morning at Fairmont Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
- Rick is survived by his devoted wife Carol J. (Ballah) Amos; his passing came six months short of a 50th anniversary milestone as the college sweethearts were married on December 23, 1967.
- Also surviving are one son Reid Sean Amos, his wife Jennie (Cunningham) Amos, and grandaughters Carol Elizabeth Amos and Victoria Catherine Amos all of Fairmont; one daughter Rikki Dawn Amos and her husband Douglas Eckstein, their daughter Margaret Alisse Eckstein and their son Andrew Irving Eckstein of Arlington, Virginia.
- He was preceded in death by his parents: Roy Thomas Amos and Elsie Marjorie Bailey Amos.
- He is survived by one brother, Larry Neal Amos, of Fairmont and his children Pennington Downing Amos of Seattle, Washington and Neal Whittington Amos of San Diego, California.
- Father of Stacey Ann Layman and Dean Brian Amos, both of Fairmont, Rick’s brother K. Brian Amos predeceased him. Mary Ann Geldbaugh Amos survives. Stacey is married to Chuck Layman and has one daughter, Kaity Layman.
- Linda Amos Wilt, his only sister, is married to Paul Lynn Wilt of Henderson, Nevada and Adrian, Michigan. They have two sons: Jeffrey Lynn Wilt, M.D. of Grand Rapids, Michigan and sons Alexander and Derek Wilt; and Kurt Ryan Wilt (Jackie Souders Wilt) of Temperance, Michigan and their children, Erika and Evan Wilt.
- Rick made many that were not family feel as if they were, and was preceded in death by two of his closest friends from his youth, Jim Ashby and Jimmy Biggs.
- Rick graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in 1964 and enjoyed serving on reunion committees, especially the recent 50th. He remained involved with the school that he loved, most prominently during the time when his wife taught at FSHS from 1984-2006. Rick supported every project, trip, and event in which his wife was involved during her 22-year tenure.
- At Fairmont State College he served as a class officer and pledged TBI fraternity, gaining a lifetime of brotherhood and friendships. Rick led his brothers in the design and construction of trophy winning parade floats and took great pride in his fraternity’s first place awards in the prestigious FSC Song Fest. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration in 1968.
- Rick and John Yerkovich established J ’n R Home Construction, building homes and businesses throughout the Fairmont area. More recently, Rick focused on designing and maintaining dental offices for Richard Cappy Kelly, D.D.S. and David Bonasso, D.D.S.; both of whom became lifelong friends.
- Rick was committed to enhancing the childhood experience for the youth in his community. He volunteered countless hours as a baseball coach, youth bowling coach, for many school and athletic booster organizations, and served as president of Fairmont Little League. He was known to lead volunteer construction projects to benefit schools and youth sports, most notably the development of the Fairmont Senior High School television studio, and he was particularly proud of the stage extension built at Miller Junior High School to accommodate a production of “Annie”.
- A native West Virginian, Rick loved Fairmont and generously devoted time to the betterment of his home among the hills. He supported the Polar Bears, Falcons, Mountaineers, Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. From a young age, he greatly enjoyed listening to music and sports on the radio and never missed a game on radio or television during the sports broadcast career of his son. Additionally his passions included: Lionel Trains; the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright; gardening; watches; working Sudoku and puzzles; coins; trivia; designing and drawing decorative flags and costumes for his grandchildren; and fixing things for friends and family.
- The quintessential common man, Rick exuded kindness and a unique sense of humor that drew people to him as he engaged them with his brand of wit and wisdom and with a smile that ingratiated all.
- As his denouement is written, the family asks friends, TBI brothers, his sisters of Gamma Chi Chi, former Little League players, his FSHS classmates, the compassionate professionals at FRMC and at MCRS, and all others whose lives were touched by his kindness to join the family in celebrating Rick's life.
Visitation will be held at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue, from 12:00 pm until 5:00 pm on July 1, 2017, to be immediately followed by a memorial service to celebrate Rick’s life.
