They established a home at Smithfield, Cache County, Utah and helped to pioneer this area. Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, Willard Richards Company (1848); Age at departure: 42
His name appears on a non-contemporary list in Journal History (Supplement after 31 Dec. 1848, 19). The names of his wife and a 7-year-old son (George) also appear on that list with him but it is highly unlikely that they traveled with him to Utah in 1848. The evidence to believe that Justin Merrill came to Utah in 1848 comes from his name appearing on the list of those filing for lots in Salt Lake in 1848. He likely came in 1848 and returned that fall to his family in Iowa and then brought all of them to Utah in 1849.
Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, Silas Richards Company (1849), Age at departure: 43
He went to Utah in 1848, returned to Iowa, and brought the rest of his family to Utah in 1849.
