Joseph Brewer was a resident of Milton for the last 55 years of his life. At 17 he entered his father's business C. Brewer & Co. which operated the old-time square rigged sailing vessels in the China and Hawaiian Islands trade. In 1913 he retired from business, the opening of the Panama Canal having turned much of the sea trade to the faster steam vessels. In 1883 Mr. Brewer came to Milton to live, locating on Adams St., Milton Hill. In 1907 he built his 650 Canton Ave. home. He is survived by wife Helen (Slocum), and sons Edward S. , John D., 2 daughters Mrs. James S. Russell (Madeline), and Mrs. Ellsworth Huntington; son Joseph Jr. died in a car accident many years ago.
