Manus Duffy was the youngest of two children born to Neil Duffy and Grace (Sweeney) Duffy, immigrants to Bayonne, New Jersey, USA from County Donegal, Ireland.

Manus and his older brother Peter lost their mother Grace to tuberculosis in 1910 when they were just tots. When their father Neil eventually remarried, the family moved back to Ireland where their beloved step mother Rose Boyle cared for them until adulthood in her old family home in Loughanure, County Donegal.

At the age of 20 Manus decided to return to New Jersey. He sailed from Londonderry, Northern Ireland on 03 Aug 1929 aboard the SS Transylvania, arriving in New York on 11 Aug 1929. He stayed with a cousin (Henry O'Brien) in Bayonne, New Jersey and found work as a boilerman in an oil refinery.

Manus married Sophie O'Donnell, a native of County Donegal, Ireland and they raised their family in Bayonne.

Manus and Sophie are buried with Manus's mother Grace (Sweeney) Duffy in Jersey City, NJ, USA.
His brother Peter and wife Annie are buried with Manus's father Neil and stepmother Rose (Boyle) Duffy.
