Mabel Hovis died on May 18, 1924 at the age of 44. Daughter Zelma, who was working in Duluth, MN, had contracted smallpox. She was being treated at a "pest house", as they were called. Mabel had taken clean clothes to her and was helping her as much as she could, like most of the mothers would, and caught the disease. The family was put under quarantine.

She only lived a short while, as the pustules broke inside her body instead of outside. Only family were allowed to attend the funeral, which was held out on the front yard, and no one was allowed near the casket. Youngest daughter, Dorothy, aged 2, went to live with eldest daughter, Madge Peterson, who was already raising her family.
