Margaret Beall Helm, first daughter of Major Benjamin (1767-1858) and Mary Edwards Helm (1777-1871), was born on April 13, 1804, in Elizabethtown, Ky. She married in 1824, Dr. James R. Gray (1793-1852). Their four children were Mary Agnes (1826-94), John Presley (1836-1916), Emily Eleanor (1838-1900), and William Henry Harrison Gray (1840-).

Major Benjamin Helm was appointed surveyor of Hardin County, Ky. by Governor Shelby in 1794, and made the first survey of Elizabethtown. He was a member of the Kentucky Senate, 1796-1800, and was appointed one of the first trustees when Elizabethtown was established in 1797. In 1800, he became clerk of the Hardin County Court and in 1803 became the first clerk of the circuit court. He held those positions until 1817. He was Elizabethtown's first bank president in 1818. He served in the War of 1812 and was at the battle of New Orleans. He built in 1801-03, the first brick house in Hardin County. It was located at the corner of Poplar and North Main Streets and was 50' x 25' with walls of the first story 18" thick and those of the second story, 13". It was finished rather elaborately on the inside with heavy mantle pieces of walnut and plastering an inch thick. The house was destroyed by fire in 1882. The oldest building still standing in Elizabethtown was built in 1806 by Major Helm. It is a brick 2 1/2 story building located at 109/111 N. Main St. Another two-story brick home built in 1812 by Major Helm is located at 238 Helm St. It is a red brick, white columned, 5-bedroom home with a 40' x 20' hall and two 20'x 20' parlors. In 1832 he was the builder and largest contributor to the building fund of the Methodist Church on Mulberry St.

Major Helm married in 1803, Mary Edwards (1777-1871), daughter of Benjamin (1752/3-1826) and Margaret Beall Edwards (1756-1826), of Bardstown, Ky. Her father was a member of the Virginia legislature and a Member of Congress from Virginia, 1793-95. Her brother, Gov. Ninian Edwards (1775-1833), was chief justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, 1808-09, governor of Illinois Territory, 1809-18, U.S. Senator, 1818-24, governor of Illinois, 1826-30, and for whom Edwards County, Ill. is named. Major Helm owned a store with Gen. Duff Green (1791-1875) in Elizabethtown and bought a farm belonging to the father of Sallie Bush Lincoln, stepmother of President Lincoln. General Green was married to Lucretia Edwards, sister of Mary Edwards, and was a Member of Congress.
