A Fallen Hero

Officer Morgan E.Skidmore had been a Pottsville policeman for fourteen years. He was the only police officer in Schuylkill County known to have been killed while on duty. At the time of his death April 16, 1928. he was forty years old. He was born and raised in the Fishbach section of the city. His death certificate # 42562 list his year of birth as 1879,but his memorial stone indicated his birth year as 1880. He was residing with his wife , Estelle aka Stella Warmkessel Skidmore on Walnut Street and one young daughter,Doris who was approaching her third birthday.

Officer Skidmore was the son of George and Gwendolyn (Davis) Skidmore. His father had been born in England and had been a coal miner, his mother had been born in Wales and was the homemaker raising the large family.Mr.Skidmore had been appointed a policeman when Pottsville became a city. Prior to his appointment as a police officer, he had worked at the local steel mill.

Patrolman Skidmore was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a juvenile boy suspected of stealing chickens. Patrolman Skidmore had followed the boy to his home. He entered the home and the boy's mother confronted him and told him the boy wasn't home, when patrolman skidmore turned to leave, the boy appeared and shot him in the back, killing him. The boy was convicted of Paatrolman Skidmore's murder . He was sent to prison, served his time, and was released.

After the murder, the city residents quickly prepared to assist the young widow of the fallen police officer, who was shot and killed in the performance of his duty. Anthony Mosolino, a prominent businessman, walked into police headquarters and handed over $1,000 in cash that he had collected as an expression of financial sympathy for the bereaved widow and daughter. The money was wrapped in a letter addressed to the mayor, which the donors of the fund asked that it be given to the officer's family with their gratitude for his service to the community. The funeral procession held in the city was one of the largest in memory.

Years later the Patrolman Skidmore's great-grandson, Steve Guers, would be on the Pottsville Police force and have the honor to place a wreath at the small memorial for Morgan Skidmore on the north sude of City Hall.

Interment occurred at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Pottsville.
