The birth and death years listed are estimates. Nancy was born in Brunswick Co, VA to John and Mary Claiborne Fox Johnson. She married Richard B Ledbetter, III in Brunswick Co, VA around 1773.

They had approximately 13 children: Elizabeth Ledbetter who married William F Whiteside; Jonathan who married Nancy Wells; Johnson W who married Elizabeth Whiteside; Martha who married James Ward; Mary who married Zadock Harris; Isaac who married Sarah Bradley; George; James; Richard who married Mary Whiteside; Johnson who married Nancy Whiteside; and three more daughters.

Bob Clark attempted to photograph her grave marker. Unfortunately, the church has no record of her burial, and a 1997 survey doesn't list her. Bob confirmed that the cemetery has several river stone monuments that lack lettering and a few standing stones with illegible weathered carving. The cemetery's oldest legible monument seemed to date to 1850's.

Richard III is the ancestor of most of the Rutherford. Co. Ledbetters. Sometime after 1770, before the Revolution, Richard III and his brothers, George and Isaac and their sister, Mary, and her husband, John Bradley, migrated to Rutherford Co., NC. Richard settled in Mumford's Cove, near a fort, for protection. The exact location can still be located by an old cellar, a couple of miles west of County Rd #1001, near the Harris Crossroads. Our country was still under the British rule. The area was at that time part of old Tryon County.

In 1838 Richard, Elizabeth, his son Johnson, and his daughter Martha Ward moved form Rutherford County, NC to Lumpkin County, Georgia. It is interesting that a 99 year old man chose to leave his home and family, make a 200 mile journey and settle on a new frontier.
The move was made by oxen pulling a wagon. The first night they made camp one-half mile from home. the second night they were just three miles from their starting point. As they were looking for a place to settle in Lumpkin County, Georgia, Richard found a fine spring and said, "Here we build."

Elizabeth returned to North Carolina about 1847. She made her home with Conrad Ward who lived on the Broad River in McDowell County, NC. At the age of 81 she applied for a Revolutionary War Veteran Widow's pension.
