U.S. VeteranA Funeral Service will be celebrated Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11:30 am at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Alfred Conrad Palfrey III, 94, who went to be with the love of his life on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette.

Father Bill Ruskoski, Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Broussard, will officiate. Vocalist will be Jodi Bollich. Readings are from the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 and from the book of St. Paul to the Romans 8:30-39, read by Meredith Guidry. Eulogies will be given by Dr. Ross McCarron and Hazel Keahey.

Alfred was born September 5, 1922 in Los Angeles, CA and was a long-time resident of Acadiana.

He graduated from Loyola High School in California and went on to attend University of Miami, obtaining a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. A proud veteran, Alfred served his country with valor. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1942 as an Aviation Cadet Assignee and promptly began pilot training. Alfred graduated from training and was commissioned a Lieutenant in 1944. He was thereafter assigned as Flight Instructor on extended active duty until 1954. In 1955, Alfred was assigned with the rank of Major, as the Squadron Commander of the 106th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squad at the United States Naval Air Station in Brooklyn, New York. In 1967, he entered the 102nd Air Transport Squadron as First Pilot and was promoted to Air Operations Officer in 1969, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Alfred served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He earned many decorations during the 29 years he served in the military, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the United Nations Korea Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award with an Oak Leaf Cluster, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with seven Gold Stars.

Alfred is survived by four sons, Karl "Bubba" Guidry and his wife, Claire of Lafayette, Gene Guidry and his wife, Jeanie of Toledo Bend, Mark Guidry of Kaplan and Paul Guidry and his wife, Lisa of Broussard; three daughters, Dr. Lynn Guidry Lastrapes of Broussard, Hazel Guidry Keahey and her husband, Dr. Thomas of Washington, DC and Elizabeth Guidry Bartlett and her husband, Albert Lee of Lafayette; one sister, Eliza P. Ellett of Lake Jackson, TX; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and numerous dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Marilyn Lois Barrilleaux Palfrey; his father, Alfred Conrad Palfrey, II; his mother, Paola Eliza Palfrey; two brothers, Frank M. Palfrey and William T. Palfrey; his sister, Paola E. Cleveland and his son-in-law, Dr. Lonnie Lastrapes.

Pallbearers will be Mark Guidry, Gene Eddie Guidry, Dr. Ross McCarron, Christopher Bartlett, Brennan Guidry and William Ellett. Honorary pallbearer is Bobby Bartlett.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ross McCarron for the compassionate care given to his grandfather, Alfred and his family.
