OBITUARY:

John G. Brown, 84-year-old native born pioneer of Polk county, passed away on Sunday, April 2. Mr. Brown is thought to have been the oldest living resident of Polk county who was born in the county. His memory, which was remarkably clear until the last, was an unwritten history of early day Dallas and Polk county.

He was the oldest son of W.C. and Martha Brown, pioneers of 1847. His father had come west as a single man, joining a train bound for Oregon just before it left Missouri. He met and courted Miss Martha Townsend on the trip and about a year later married her. They took up a donation land claim on the northeast edge of Dallas.

Mr. Brown was born there, June 1, 1849. In 1853 his father purchased a stock of merchandise at Ellendale and moved it to Cynthian (North Dallas), later establishing it in Dallas when the town was located at its present site. He continued in this business for approximately 50 years.

John Brown was married in 1871 to Miss Eveline Whitley. Two sons, William H. and T.C. Brown, were born to them and both reside near Dallas. One sister, Mrs. Ann Kersey, alone remains of the original W.C. Brown family.

Mr. Brown had owned for many years the store building in which Mrs. Gregory's store was located. He also owned the frame building next to the City Bank building on Mill street which was formerly used as a creamery.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Henkle & Thomas chapel with Rev C.J. Cole officiating. Burial was in the Brown cemetery, a short distance north of his old home.
