Inscription

This monument erected by Sarah,
surviving companion

In memory of
Mr. BENJAMIN FAIRBANKS,
who died May 28, 1828;
aged 81 yrs, & 6 mos.

He came into the town now Winthrop
in May 1766 and was the fourth settler,
& resided on the same farm he first took up
until his death being 62 years.
As a man he was a kind husband,
tender parent, and uncommonly
benevolent to the poor.

I am taken from time you see,
And all mankind must follow me;
May all who come and view this stone,
Adore the great chief cornerstone.
