Smithfield, June 10--Funeral services for Sophronia Tidwell were held in the Second Ward Meeting house May 27, Bishop Lorenzo Toolson presiding. Grandsons were pall bearers and granddaughters were flower bearers. The Second Ward choir furnished the music. Opening prayer George L. Farrell.
The speakers were George Doane, Bishop W. L. Winn, John H. Peterson, W. A. Nobie and Bishop Toolson all of whom testified of the noble life of Mrs. Tidwell. Nathan Done and Clara Sparks sang a duet and Miss Maggie Merrill sang a solo. Benediction by C. J. Plowman. The grave was dedicated by Elder Albert McCann.
Sophronia A. Tidwell was the daughter of Josephus and Malinda Durphy Hatch, she was born in Vermont, and when she was seven years of age her parents accepted the Gospel and joined the Church. In 1842 they moved to Nauvoo where they heard the Prophet Joseph Smith many times.
The family started on the westward journey in 1846. They journeyed to Sugar Creek where they stopped until the fall of 1849, then they moved on to Winter Quarters where they spent the winter. They then moved to Pleasant Grove, Iowa, where they got ready to come to Utah. She attended school 3 years while at Pleasant Grove. She was married to Peter Tidwell on March 28, 1852.
They started for Utah the following May and after arriving in Salt Lake spent 2 or 3 weeks and then moved on to Ogden where they lived 10 years except a short time when they lived at Payson. They moved to Richmond, Utah, in 1862 where they lived 2 years, then moved to Smithfield in1864 where they had resided ever since. Her husband died March 23, 1909. They raised a large and respected family.
