Donald Clarence Ayres passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 3, 2017 in Conroe with his family by his side. Don had a kind heart, but eventually succumbed to heart failure after a few years of cardiac complications.
Born in Houston on June 15, 1935, Don grew up with his brothers Jim and Roy in South Houston. Don later followed his older brother Jim into the US Navy as a radio operator serving in the Pacific and living in Japan during the Korean War. After attending the University of Texas and University of Houston, he entered the business world and found his calling in sales. Don met and married his lovely bride of more than 50 years, Brenda Rudel. Don began a career with Economics Laboratory in 1966 and was promoted to District Manager and relocated to Florida in 1972 but eventually moved the family back to Texas in 1977 settling in Conroe.
Don worked until the very end. The owner and operator of Ayres & Co. Ecowater in Conroe since 1981, he loved engaging with customers across the Houston/Conroe area. Never one to stay in one place long, Don enjoyed being on the road every day, visiting customers, running his business and working hands-on with his sales and service team.
An avid poker player since his Navy days, Don was involved in no less than three regular games each week and was no stranger to casinos from Lake Charles to Las Vegas. For almost 40 years, Don and his neighbor and friend, Carl Busbee, enjoyed playing cards including an on-going gin rummy tournament. Don's other hobbies throughout the years included earning his pilot license and restoring classic MG's and VW Beetles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard B. & Adelia Ayres, as well as his brothers, James and Roy Ayres, nephew Jared Ayres and former son-in-law Stefan Scott. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, his daughter Melissa, son-in-law Mike Hallaron, his daughter Gretchen, son-in-law Joey Willey, and his daughter Sonya, son-in-law Michael Fields. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Sarah Jane Hallaron, Sean Patrick Hallaron, and Kamryn Reese Willey; nephews James Ayres and Lance Rudel; and nieces Jacelyn Swenson and Shawn Rudel.
Throughout his life, he always saw the best in people and connected across generations. He will be missed by many.
A celebration of his life will be held on what would have been his 82nd birthday, Thursday, June 15th at 11a.m. at McNutt Funeral Home in Conroe. Interment with military honors will be held on Friday, June 16th at 10:45 a.m. at Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Meals on Wheels Montgomery County at MOWMC.org.
