MRS. ELLEN J. STARK, AGED 75 AND (sic) OLD SETTLER HERE, DIES
Mrs. Ellen J. Stark, aged 75 years 2 months and 25 days, widow of the late R. C. Stark and an old resident of this section, died Sunday night at her home after a long illness. She is survived by three children, Arthur M. Stark of Chetopa, Frank Stark of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Daisy Stephens of Cedaredge, Colo., a number of grandchildren; two brothers, W. S. Thomas of Shafter, Colo., and J. O. Thomas of Long Beach, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Molly Rucker of Corning, Kas., and Mrs. Florentine Randel of Burlingame, Kas. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the home, Rev. Rector Green officiating and burial being in Oak Hill cemetery.
Ellen J. Thomas was born in Owens (sic) county, Indiana, February 16, 1849. As a child she moved with her parents to a farm near Albany, Mo., where she was married to Robert Campbell Stark January 14, 1869. To them six children were born, the first three dying in infancy. When first married Mr. and Mrs. Stark moved to Nemaha county, Kansas, homesteading a place near Corning, where they lived until 1884, when they came to this vicinity, where they had made their home most of the time since. Mr. Stark passed away January 6, 1912.
Mrs. Stark was converted at a Methodist camp meeting when 17 years old and had since then been an active and consistent Christian. .... She was a member of the United Presbyterian church here until it was merged with the Presbyterian church. Twelve years ago she changed her church affiliation to the Methodist body, of which she was a member at the time of her death. ....
In her last illness, which has been long, her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Stark, has been a wonderfully faithful, patient and tireless attendant at her side.
--------
Note Ellen's name as Juretta Ellen. Her paternal grandparent's Bible spells her name Juretia.
It is possible Ellen was born February 1850 and her birth date was being confused with her parents' marriage date of 15 Feb 1849.
